Silver Spring Library - Unveiling of Exterior Views

On October 24, 2009, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, Montgomery County Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg and senior officials unveiled pictures of the exterior views of the new Silver Spring Library. The new Silver Spring Library will be located at the intersection of Wayne Avenue, Fenton Street and Bonifant Street. More than 1,000,000 patrons are expected to use the facility every year.

The new library looks great, but one thing is missing.... the convenient parking we have at the current location. The nearest parking is across the street in the Wayne Avenue Garage. So far the County Council has refused to amend the urban renewal plan to allow a bridge between the garage and the library. That means most of those million library patrons each year will have to walk half a block to the corner from the garage, try to get across Wayne Avenue (which will soon have Purple Line trains every 3 minutes as well as all the current traffic), and then walk a half block back to the library entrance. That may not be so bad in the abstract, but try it with a bag of books with small children or when it is raining or snowy. And by the way, the bridge is the cheapest way for the the library to meet ADA handicapped accessibility requirements. The County Council needs to approve building the library bridge!

The library looks horrible. Glitzy and showy, hardly the right tone for a Library. Nuff said thought.
Don't waste a cent on a bridge for people who don't want to cross a street. You make it sound like the Batann Death March. There's nothing abstract about walking. And there's a reason there was an urban renewal plan, it was to renew the urbanism, and your not going to get there providing separate pedestrian access. Why won't the county carry me to Whole Foods? Don't they know there might be a pothole in the cross walk!
